The €50,000 Alfred Kordelin Prize is one of the most significant annual awards presented in Finland
The prizes are awarded for socially impactful and topical contributions that advance science, the arts and public education. The award recipients are top professionals in their fields and strengthen the diversity, competence and internationality of Finnish society through their work, creating a foundation for a more sustainable and better future. The prize sum is 50,000 euros, and two to three prizes are awarded each year.
The awards process resembles that of the Nobel Prize: 150 nominators, including Finnish universities, embassies and arts and cultural organizations, may submit candidates. The candidates are reviewed by the prize comittee. More information on our Finnish website: Prize comittee.
The Foundation awarded the first honorary prize in 1923. At the time, the prize was 100,000 Finnish marks and was awarded to composer Jean Sibelius. Details of other previous award recipients can be found on our Finnish website: Awardees.
