The Alfred Kordelin Foundation has awarded the Alfred Kordelin Prize to dance artist and choreographer Tero Saarinen, Professor of Metallurgy Mari Lundström, and Sekasin Kollektiivi, an organization focused on youth mental health work.

Through their work in science, art, and civil society, the awardees have contributed to creating the foundations for a stronger, more diverse, and sustainable society.

“All the awardees are top professionals in their fields, whose work has a broader societal impact. Each of them has made significant breakthroughs in their respective areas,” says Mikko Kosonen, Chair of the Foundation’s Prize Committee.

The €50,000 Alfred Kordelin Prize is awarded annually to two or three individuals, working groups, or organizations.

The award selection process resembles that of the Nobel Prize. The award cannot be applied for; instead, 80 nominators, including Finnish universities and cultural organizations, submit candidates. The winners are announced each year on November 6th, Alfred Kordelin’s birthday.

The foundation has been recognizing notable Finns in science, the arts, and public enlightenment since 1923. The first recipient of the prize was composer Jean Sibelius. Subsequent recipients have included actor Vesa-Matti Loiri, President Martti Ahtisaari, and academician Kaisa Häkkinen.
