Umppa Niinivaara’s sculptures are inspired by nature. She uses various techniques to create organic patterns on the surface of her ceramic works. At Kultaranta, the forms in her series Hidden (2025–2026) resemble organisms hidden in nature.
Some of the pieces suggest sea anemones, seeds or flower bulbs, invites the viewer to ponder the origins of life and nature’s own generative force.
Some of the pieces suggest sea anemones, seeds or flower bulbs, invites the viewer to ponder the origins of life and nature’s own generative force. Others mimic the shape of hornlike cup lichens, which grow tenaciously in even the most challenging conditions: inside rock crevices and in the shade of other plants. The plenitude and vigour of different habitats preserve the diversity of species in nature. How can we ensure that nature will remain a wellspring of life?

Umppa Niinivaara (b. 1970) is a sculptor who lives and works in Karuna, Sauvo. She earned her degree in visual arts from the Turku School of Fine Arts and completed a Master of Arts degree at the Winchester School of Art.
