Purpose of the Grant

The Kordelin Foundation’s Gust. Komppa Fund promotes the field of chemistry by supporting its teaching and research, disseminating research results and applications, and enhancing both domestic and international collaboration in the field. The fund also awards grants for the popularization of chemistry to increase the field’s attractiveness. In addition, the fund periodically awards the Jaakko Paasivirta Prize. Read more about our funds.

Funding path with the Foundation

The Foundation provides different types of funding methods, allowing a project to receive long-term funding during a span of several years. A project financed by a fund can start out as an experiment, building the basis for further, expanded operations. A promising project may become eligible for the Foundation’s August grant round, expand into a two-year Major cultural project, and, if successful, also receive bridge funding to ensure its continuity. Who Can Apply?

Finnish citizens or private individuals operating in Finland and registered collectives with a Finnish Business ID can apply for a grant. A working group may apply for a grant if the official applicant is an association. In this case, the association applies for a grant on behalf of the members of the working group.

How Are Applications Evaluated?

Applications are assessed based on the following criteria, depending on the project goal:

  • For all applications, the potential of the project to increase the visibility of chemistry, popularize the field, advance teaching or research, or promote domestic or international collaboration. The applicant must clearly define the goal of the grant.
  • For outreach/popularization projects, the extent to which the project enhances the public’s understanding and interest in chemistry.
  • For events, the target audience and the significance of reaching that audience: who the event/project is aimed at and how likely it is to reach them.
  • For domestic/international collaboration, the significance of the visit for the applicant’s career path.
  • The realism of the application, clarity of the plan, credibility of implementation, and adequacy of resources (budget, expertise).

Evaluation proceeds in three stages:

  1. Expert members of the fund assess all submitted applications.
  2. Funding decisions are drafted in a joint meeting of the foundation and fund experts.
  3. The foundation’s Board makes the final decisions.
